Diving and Fishing:
Characteristics of the area:
Thanks to the mix of the cold Humboldt Current and the warm El Niño (or Ecuadorian) Current, here at the coast of Piura and Tumbes we can find many different marine species. Plus there is a place call “Banco de Mancora”, which it lodges an important amount of marine flora and fauna.
Here we name the favorites fishes for fishermen and divers:
- Grouper (murique, ojo chico)
- Fortuno
- Marlin
- Giant Bluefin Tuna
- Wahoo
- Conger
- swordfish
- Espada
- Loro

Diving:
On Piura and Tumbes area, the majority of divers of behind the Mero (Grouper) or Fortuno, big fine fishes that are always on the Mancora coast, not very far away from seashore and at some “bajos” (divers spots) known only by the local divers.
Even though the visibility is not comparable to the Caribbean sea for example, but is enough to view many types of fishes. A good visibility day can reach up to 5 mts.
The favorites divers areas are at Pocitas and in Vichayito the place known as “Bajerío Peña Mala”, and also to the south of Cabo Blanco. Towards Tumbes is Punta Sal, a well know divers and fishermen spot and other near the beach call Peña Mala.
We strongly recommend you to go with some local diver to get the best fish locations
At Mancora and its surrounding there is not a store or easy to find equipment. Me recommend you bring your own stuff, long wetsuits, and everything you need to get a good dive.

Fishing:
Besides seashore fishing, here the most wanted type is the high sea fishing. You can bring to the pier some really big and impressive animals like giant Tunas and marlins that can weight more than100 kgs.
Several little companies and local fishermen offer fishing trips on Mancora, Punta Sal, Organos and Cabo Blanco, this last spot with still a world record on the Black Marlin.
