SEA WILDLIFE WATCHING

The most common habitants of this zone Las Tijeretas or Aves Fragata, El Piquero de Patas Azules o Camanay, tropical Birds and several sorts of marine turtles and even a sea snake. The fishes are plentiful and very varied, from the dolphins, whales, sharks and mantarayas, to the congers, corvinas, groupers, tuna fishes and merlines. Also a great sort of mollusks, crustaceous and cephalopods as shells, barnacles, clams, crabs, lobsters, prawns, octopuses and squids...

Ecoturism.- In the investigation that was accomplished to determine the tourist potential of the zone, were detected 2 ample- activities of ample development in the world markets, due to  its special configuration not only on the ground, but also on the sea, the study zone counts with a great variety of marine mammals, thus enormous Tortugas Galapagos, Mantarrayas and sharks, that today attract each time more fans to the natural observation worldwide.

This peculiar habit congregates all kinds of sea birds that are very valuables for the ornithologists ( bird - watchers ), such as the Cóndor, the Halcón Peregrino, 2 species of Pelícanos, 3 species of Pájaros Dodos, 3 species of Cormorantes, 2 species of Albátroz, 9 Variety of of Petrels, Aves Fragata, Gaviotas Peregrinas, Bubias, Golondrinas, etc., standing out the following :

  • Gaviota de las Galápagos (Creagrus furcatus)
  • Golondrina de tempestad chica (Oceanites gracilis)
  • Golondrina de tempestad común (Oceanites oceanicus)
  • Paloma del Cabo (Daption capense)
  • Pardela común (Puffinus griseus)
  • Petrel plateado (Fulmarus glacialoides)
  • Salteador grande (Catharacta skua)

In Peru have been detected at least 30 species of mammal mariners, that include great- interest issues for the scientists and naturists ( whale - watchers ), such as dolphins, whales, killer whales, cachalotes and sea lions, the scientist classify  these species in 9 taxonomic families, being the most important the cetaceans, that are the one of most interest among the cultores of this specialized activity.

The cetaceans are very well representative in the Peruvian waters, and all these sorts of species, are been protected by the Law, being definitively prohibited its capture or the consumption and commercialization of its products. However its observation is still difficult, due to the lack of tourist- infrastructure for such purpose.
Species of great scientist value are present in this zone, either to be in danger or on its way to extinction, in vulnerable situation, for its native rarity, or for joining character of endemism that must be specify for further investigations.

It is believed for example, that this zone would be the place in which some sort of whales meet together to copulate, or perhaps to give birth to their offspring.

Several sorts of dolphins or bufeos, like the Nariz de Botella and the common, in addition to Marsopas o Chanchos Marinos, Ballenas, Orcas y Cachalotes, are common residents and  passerbies from these waters, constituting a true challenge for the scientific and the to the fans to Whale watching.

The principles and more known species of Cetaceans, like the ones with a bigger number of records in the zone are:

  • Ballena piloto de aleta larga (Globicephala melas)
  • Cachalote (Physeter catodon / macrocephalus)
  • Cachalote pigmea (Kogia breviceps)
  • Cachalote enena (Kogia simus)
  • Delfín cabeza de melón (Peponocephala electra)
  • Delfín común, bufeo (Delphinus delphis / spp)
  • Delfín gris (Grampus griseus)
